Overview:
Our client is a globally recognised international infrastructure and environmental services organisation delivering major engineering, water, and industrial infrastructure projects across Australia and internationally.
As part of continued growth across its major projects and engineering division, the company is seeking to appoint an experienced Contracts Manager to support the commercial and contractual management of major design and construction programmes in Sydney, Australia. This position will play a key role in both pre-contract and post-contract management, ensuring contractual risks are effectively managed, project obligations are met, and the organisation’s commercial position is protected across complex infrastructure projects.
The role offers the opportunity to work within a highly technical engineering environment focused on large-scale water and infrastructure projects, supporting project delivery teams while providing strategic contractual guidance across the project lifecycle.
Job Description:
The Contracts Manager will support the delivery of major engineering and infrastructure projects, overseeing contractual processes from tender stage through to final project completion.
Working closely with project managers, engineering teams, procurement, and legal functions, the role will focus on contract review, risk management, claims preparation, dispute avoidance, and contractual negotiation.
The successful candidate will play a central role in protecting the organisation’s contractual position while supporting project teams in achieving successful commercial outcomes.
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide pre-contract support during tendering phases, including review and analysis of client contract documentation
- Support preparation and negotiation of joint venture agreements, consortium agreements, and partner contracts
- Advise on appropriate contractual structures and amendments to contract terms and conditions
- Participate in contract negotiations with clients, partners, and key subcontractors
- Manage post-contract administration, including monitoring contractual obligations and compliance
- Maintain and update contract obligation registers and support project teams in meeting contractual commitments
- Draft and manage formal contractual correspondence, including notices, responses, and contractual instructions
- Support preparation of contractual claims, loss and expense submissions, and dispute-related documentation
- Identify contractual risks and develop defensive strategies to protect project margins
- Assist in identifying commercial opportunities including variation orders and value engineering initiatives
- Support negotiation and settlement of contractual disputes through amicable resolution or formal dispute procedures
- Assist with project close-out processes, including final completion obligations and contractual release requirements
Profile Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or similar
- Extensive experience in construction contract management or commercial management within infrastructure projects
- Strong knowledge of contract law, procurement processes, and contractual risk management
- Experience supporting design & construction contracts on medium to large-scale infrastructure programmes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to anticipate contractual risks
- Excellent negotiation and stakeholder management skills
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to draft formal contractual correspondence
- Ability to work closely with technical, legal, procurement, and project delivery teams
- Professional certifications such as CIArb, RICS, PMI or equivalent are advantageous
- Experience within water infrastructure, utilities, or major engineering projects is highly desirable
