Overview:
Our client is a global leader in advanced chemical science, delivering complex industrial projects across Europe and Asia that support sectors such as construction, energy, automotive, and manufacturing. Following recent strategic investment, the organisation is strengthening its capital project and contract management capability to better control risk across major EPC/EPCM project environments. They are now seeking a Contract & Claims Manger professional to play a key role in keeping large-scale projects on time, on budget, and contractually protected through proactive risk management and close internal collaboration.
The Opportunity:
An opportunity exists for an experienced Contract & Claims Manager to join a major capital investment project based in Shanghai, China. This is a flagship industrial development valued in excess of $2bn USD, with a planned project lifecycle of approximately five years. The role will be embedded within the project team from an early stage to ensure strong contractual governance, risk control, and claims management throughout the full delivery programme. You will play a key role in safeguarding the organisation’s contractual position, supporting project leadership, and ensuring robust contract administration across complex EPC/EPCM interfaces.
Your Responsibilities:
- Lead the contractual and commercial governance of capital projects up to €50m in value
- Establish practical approaches to managing contractual risk, entitlement, and recovery throughout the project lifecycle
- Safeguard the organisation’s contractual position from project inception through to completion
- Assess, pursue, and defend claims with a balanced, evidence-based approach
- Support the preparation of tender and procurement documentation and contribute to contract negotiation activities
- Work closely with engineering, legal, audit, and project delivery teams to ensure contractual alignment across stakeholders
- Provide contract awareness, guidance, and knowledge sharing to project teams through reviews and internal sessions
- Embed structured methods for identifying risk, opportunity, and contractual exposure at each project stage
- Take ownership of dispute avoidance and resolution processes where required
- Maintain clear, professional records and correspondence to support robust contract administration and potential claims positions
Your Profile:
- University degree in engineering, construction, or a related technical discipline, ideally complemented by contractual or legal training.
- A minimum of around 10 years’ experience in contract and claims management within construction or engineering project environments.
- Practical experience gained on complex industrial or process plant projects, preferably within international settings.
- Demonstrable expertise in contract administration, entitlement management, and handling claims in live project environments.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical, legal, and project delivery stakeholders.
- Willingness to be based in Shanghai and have on-site involvement.
- Fluency in Mandarin/Chinese and English language skills are essential, with additional languages considered advantageous.
